He was on last night. He was very good.  Try to catch it.  You will be hearing more about him.  He talks very fast, and cuts it clear to the bone.  He talks about the last six years as the madness from Washington, that has been hopefully tempered by the November elections.

Maybe this shouldn't be a dairy, but he is a great speaker and will be heard a lot this next year or two.  Try to catch him on CSPAN.  They will probably show it again this weekend. I think he is talking at a conference of mayors, governors, or municipal workers.

His main thesis is that the cities (330 MSAs), are where about 80 percent of the people in the USA live.  They are falling apart and no one is doing anything about it.  And while this is happening "the madness" is going on in Washington.

He talks so fast that it is very hard to keep up.  He ideas are very simple.  This guy is on the rise.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I'm a UW student and I just finished taking a class with him and all I can say is BORING

  •  Isn't Rogers (0+ / 0-)

    a flaming alcoholic?

I've heard that he just doesn't show up at conferences because he went on a bender the night before...

  •  It's not much of a diary ... (0+ / 0-)

... but Rogers IS an interesting figure. He's one of the smartest people I've ever met. Like, really, really smart. You know those people you know that you think are really, really smart? Well, Rogers is a lot smarter than them.

I don't know whether he's a rising personality or not, though. I mean, he's been saying all of these things for 15 years now. He's a MacArthur Fellow. And so on. Thus far, few have been listening.

    •  Does every diary need to be 1,000 words? (0+ / 0-)

I don't have time to read a long diary.  I just thought that he was an interesting speaker and had some good "from the ground" insights.

Frankly, I am tired of lengthy dairies.  Who has twenty minutes to read them?
I would rather spend a minute each on twenty short dairies than twenty minutes on one dairy that just keeps making the same point over and over.

I guess that's the different between a professional writer that has hours and hours to compose a well written dairy, and some lay person that just has something to say, but not very eloquently.

Mostly, I just didn't want to get a lot of flack for recommending a diary that was more of a heads-up kind of thing. I think most people expect this sort of notice to appear in an open thread -- partly, in order to slow down the rate at which meatier stuff scrolls off the recent diaries list.

When I come across an interesting book or individual, I often look for opportunities to mention the subject in my comments in other diaries -- turning it into part of a larger conversation, where it's more likely to be noticed, and, I hope, to attract the interest of someone who's already reading about the related topic.

        •  Thanks. I'll post on open thread next time (0+ / 0-)

It's Christmas and I'm just tired of the "meatier stuff".
