Nebraska Outsider, 26, diaries frustrated questions about the baggage that boomers and elders carry, and the commenters follow along with senior rigidity and intolerance of radical youth.
If so, how did we end up on DailyKos, and why are we such a large part of the netroots? SeniorNet is one of the fastest growing online communities, if you ignore fads like MySpace.
Impatiently, we flip under the fold...
Followiing the comments, I notice that little is made of the toxic stew of controversy-as-discussion that the new generation was raised in. We've had thirty years or more of post-WWII hope, Cold War fear-mongering with nuclear fallout, Berlin Wall hope for the Peace Dividend, and Carlyle and Halliburton armament-maker fear-mongering again.
Maybe the kids haven't heard of 1984, but we have. We know Brave New World, and worry about the dangers of abstract god-based morality. The kids seem to be ahistoric. We should teach them, because the Internet, combined with the bad education of the 1960-2000 era, is a classic teachable moment.
I suggest evolutionary science, the hope of genetic engineering, minus the scare tactics of the politically correct polarizers, and the modifying of destructive human old-instincts to allow the better world implied in technology and rationally based evidentiary morality now being shown by Dawkins, Dennett and Harris, with the insights of Judith Harris, Susan Blackmore, and The Adapted Mind.
There will be residual resentment when the discomfort strikes the old because their shibboleths are shattered, but the life of the species depends on the new understandings being passed on to the young.
Take it from here, kids. We may not have been able to prevent some wars, and our main product may still be guns, not butter, but we have also laid the groundwork for scientific, evidence-based understanding of the human condition.
Don't fall for the fear-mongers. The ONLY way for the human race to survive is to understand fear, greed, and the lust for power, and put into place the rule of law, which we old folk understand is how instincts are regulated. Carry on.
