Dispatch from THE GREAT STATE OF MAINE...
Cheers and Jeers for Monday, December 22, 2003
CHEERS to the capture of Saddam Hussein. America is so much safer with bad man behind bars, terror alert has been raised to Orange. If this is progress, maybe we should rethink capturing Bin Laden.
CHEERS to the Kurds. Credible report says wily K-Team nabbed, drugged Saddam, then left him for easy pick-up by Yanks (signature required?). Grab some popcorn and settle in as we watch Bushies spin their way outta this one.
JEERS to George Stephanopoulos. Invites Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi on "This Week," only to interrupt interview after ONE question to show 20-minute infomercial for Wes Clark. Good thing you're a "news" show...bait-and-switch is illegal everywhere else.
CHEERS to the end of Boston's Big Dig. Last car drives across above-ground I-93 artery as new tunnel---finally---opens. But AM radio reception is going to suck now.
JEERS to James Carville. Refuses to fight wife's venom-soaked diatribe against Howard Dean on Meet the Press. Best he can do is `Don't worry, other Dems are upticking in polls.' Next week on the Spice Channel: Matalin/Carville/Russert threesome on 'Hotel Erotica.'
CHEERS to Libya (yes, kids...Libya). Ghaddafi to dismantle WMD programs, allow UN snap inspections. Damn...don't you hate it when multilateral negotiations interfere with unilateral invasion plans?
JEERS to Martha Stewart. Says this will be "saddest holiday ever." I thought arts and crafts were supposed to chase the blues away. Was it all a...a...a LIE?
CHEERS to `Return of the King.' Dazzling epic sets new box office records. Pentagon now looking into military value of olyphants.
JEERS to Bush "Tax cut and spend" economy. Congressional Budget Office says crisis looms on horizon and even hefty tax increases may not dig us out for 50 years. Ah...but what if we cut taxes AGAIN---it's just crazy enough to work...
CHEERS to year-end newsmagazine issues. `In memoriam' sections keep me busy at www.findagrave.com for hours. What fun!
CHEERS to two...count `em, two...short workweeks ahead. Love those Thursday holidays (but next year sucks...Xmas and New Years fall on Saturday).
What are you cheering or jeering about today?
