Yesterday, I got some news that will change the rest of my life. Yesterday, I found out that my girfriend is a month pregnant. This is unexpected news for us, but happy news nonetheless.
I'm sure you are wondering why I would choose a political site of all places to make an announcement. I do so because politics now means something entirely different to me and the issues take on an entirely different meaning. Education is no longer an abstract issue, but a means to a good future for my child. My child will be half Asian, so the issues of tolerance, racial and religious harmony mean even more. The environement and conversation are not debates about science, it's about whether he or she will have clean air to breath, clean lakes to swim in and forests to hike through.
And this war is no longer just something I watch on TV, it's something that can set the country's direction for the next 20 years. How will nations think of us then? Where can my child travel? Will he or she have to fight in a war future war that has been set into motion by this one?
She has already settled into the SF Bay area and is waiting for me to find a job there, so hopefully I'll be joining her soon. What I most hope for is that I'll be there in time to fight against the Governor's ballot measure. So CA kossacks, please do me a great big favor. Kill those ballot measures. All of our kids' futures may depend on it.
So now I fight harder, not only for my child's future, but all our kids' futures. Politics is no longer a game for me. It's no longer about winning and losing. It's about what kind of country and world we live in.
