The first installment of the Dkos Bookclub will be posted by tryptamine tomorrow. We'll be discussing Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s "The First Circle". If you haven't read it I suggest you get started. It's over 600 pages and your homework is due tomorrow.
After the flip I'll introduce the next book in the DKos Bookclub series.
The next book we'll tackle is Sarah Vowell's The Partly Cloudy Patriot (Amazon link is for informational purposes only. Buy, borrow, or steal from any source you wish). Sarah Vowell is a frequent guest of The Daily Show and is regular contributor to This American Life and McSweeney's. This collection of essays
focus(es) on her ambivalent relationship to American history and citizenship: no one in recent memory has been as insightful on the direct pleasures and perils of voting, the misuse of Rosa Parks as a metaphor, the appeal of Canadians (who "ha[ve] this weird knack for loving their country in public without resorting to swagger or hate") and the relative merits of presidential libraries. --Publishers Weekly (see Amazon link above)
