San Francisco Kossacks Holiday Party Photos!

The San Francisco Bay Area Kossacks had their holiday party yesterday with over 40 peeps in attendance.

Thanks to everyone that made the trek from far away places like Ukiah and Los Angeles. A special thanks to Kos, Elise and Ari for making a personal appearance.

"Road (airline) Warrior Award" goes to Fabooj, Mr. Fabooj and their 2 darling kidlets.  They flew up from L.A.

"Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award" goes to SallyCat and Mr. Cat.  They opened their lovely home in Marin to all of us loons and cooked a bunch of jambalaya and pies.  The Cats really went out of their way by renting chairs and creating a fabulous kid friendly atmosphere.

    Brave - nah. Lots of people brought lots of food and drink. We only cooked a few things. We had leftovers of some and nothing left of all sorts of other yummies which were being sent home. Everyone had something to talk about...oh yeah other than politics.

        You just stepped in and filled in wherever someone needed something! I'll party with you any time!

        Clean up was easy. Recycling was taken out as it was needed throughout the day. Trash was picked up by people as they went. Dishes through the dishwasher. About an hour total to do wine glasses and vacuum - no big deal.

        Pies - 4 pumpkin and 2 lemon!

        With all the cookies and candies and homemade fudge there was leftoves! We actually got to send some pie home with the late stayers!

            So all in all it was a great timing. Most got to drive home before it got too late and dark.

                                in SD <grin> but Pierre or Rapid City are the closest cities with airports and most people fly into Rapid City.

                                Sun Dance ends in the late afternoon/early evening on Sunday.  4 Days of Purification and then 4 Days for the ceremony itself.  

                                Only the people who are actually dancing are required to be on the grounds for the 4 days of purification but because it gets so crowded, most of the camps are set up by the Saturday before it starts.

  Is Iraq an Unsolvable Problem?

  Of the many disturbing aspects of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, perhaps the most serious was the visible lack of understanding – at both the elite and popular levels – of Iraq and the Arab / Muslim world.

  Despite more than three years in Iraq, this seemingly willful ignorance remains even more pronounced, raising questions about the ability of the US as a society to learn from evident experience.

  In this context, the question “what should we do?” is premature.

  We need instead to take a profoundly critical look at the thinking that got us into this situation in the first place, especially among the Democrats and broad public that went along with the Bush regime program.

  In the absence of such a fundamental analysis, the US will continue to make the same sort of basic mistakes that have plagued this venture from the beginning, and have not just needlessly polarized Western / Muslim relations at the worst possible time, but created a situation of structural, decades-long instability in a part of the world we cannot simply “leave,” however emotionally satisfying such an idea may be.

  I guess you took the pix before I made up the nametags. Of course some of them were talking so intently I couldn't break in. How unusual <|;->

  It was a great party, plenty of good and interesting food, wonderful people every one, even the ones who protested they were asocial (hat tip to MoodyLoner, or LonelyMoodler, whatever) I never expecting to be swapping tips and stories about running small daycares. Heh!

  Huge props to SallyCat and the Mister, a wonderful team in the kitchen: (actual dialogue, her to him... "I guess I should just get out of your way."

  Many groovy wines, but also drinks for those who have developed an allergy to (tasty) biofuel as they get older. (Will your car get a hangover from ethanol?)

  Comes around a plate of roasted oyster, slice of water chestnut, wrapped with bacon. Rugalah? Yum.

  Snacks, devilled eggs, crackers, chips, dipdipdip, towers of pies, trays of casseroles, Jelly Bellies, nuts, plastofood for nerds, VERY spicy chix w/egg noodles,soft music, and a yard AND covered patio, just enough space, two bathrooms, and a play area RIGHT in the middle of the maroon carpet, with PlayDoh, toys, books and so on. No TV, no computer.

  Maybe the nicest groups of kids I've ever seen, helping each other, polite, funny, unbearably cute, with everyone being Mommy and Daddy (takes a village) and the good non-rejecting vibes keeping the kids from acting out for attention.

  Maybe a party where the parents spend all their time talking is better to these kids than a home where the parents spend all their time staring at, or yelling at the computer screen (see clammyc's Rec'd diary above).

  A beautiful HOME, freshly polished but very personally expressive.

  I met a lot of people I only had read before, and crossed s/words with before, and mutually rec'd before. h/t to Fabooj, who really fills a room!

  Had a nice round robin with Kos, Side Pocket and others about solar heat and electrons, guy stuff.  

  A very good time was had by me, and I suspect by all. I never saw a cross expression or heard a snide remark the whole four hours I lasted.

  Kudos to all, especially the hosts!
