So here is how it went down...
I am
Debi Srail's (please send money) campaign manager, and Debi could not make it to an event tonight, because, well, like all good candidates she
can be in two places at once, but 3 is just too many. The event, a fundraiser for the
Children's Campaign Fund, an amazing PAC that deals entirely with children's issues in Washington State, and weilds a very appropriate and strong amount of influence on both sides of the aisle, was held at Congressman Jim McDermott's home in Queen Anne. Yeah, that Jim McD, star of F9/11 and voice in the wilderness during the buildup to the Iraq debacle.
There were about 100 guests, including over a dozen state reps, and half a dozen state senators, a goodly number of local opinion makers, and at least 2 Kossaks, me and chadlupkes, who is also the webmaster for Democracy for Washington.
The party was, well, a party, with wine, finger-food, mingling, glad-handing (remember,
everyone there was political) and some way-above-average conversation.
The event was smooth, the speakers (including our host) were brief and inspiring (a magical combination, to be sure) and the finger-food was the usual Seattle excellent.
And I did a goofy thing. Okay, I was enough of a grown-up to talk to Congressman McDermott about how we both got into politics, and the similarity that we both saw between the mid sixties and the current build-up to war. But then I did something unthinkable for someone like me, who has spent much of his life around celebrities.
Yah, I know. But you see, it was for my oldest son, who is a freshman in college in Arizona. One of his biggest heroes is.... Jim McDermott.
Earlier this year, through a connection to a previous life, I was able to introduce him to Harlan Ellison, who is his
other hero. This time, I got an...ummm...errr... an autograph.
And Jim was nice enough to write my son a note about college. He also made me promise that this would NOT be the only thing the poor boy got for Christmas.
So here is my poll....
