Wed's L&O included "ripped from the headlines" plot-lines including the outing of an elected government official after he had a gay affair, and a small town mayor issuing gay marriage licenses.
In the case, a gay man confessed to his partner that he had committed a murder. The defense claimed spousal privilege. The couple had been legally married in the state of New York by the mayor of a small town. DA Jack McCoy went to the state supreme court to get spousal privilege denied to the gay couple, arguing the statute was written before anyone had conceived of gay marriage, and therefore shouldn't apply to gay marriage. It was a weak argument, imo, but the state SC ruled in his favor.
When the case resumed, the witness refused to testify because McCoy had done such great harm to the gay rights cause and he went to jail for contempt. His partner plead guilty to manslaughter to get him released.
So much has been written here in the last 9 days about gay rights/gay marriage, I thought I would ask: What do the Kossacks who watched the show think of the way the issue was portrayed?
