WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A pair of former presidential candidates from the major U.S. political parties appealed for more civil debate in the campaign on Sunday and warned that Americans will sit out the election if the current tone continues.
The unusual bipartisan appeal came from Sen. John McCain, an Arizona Republican, and Sen. Joseph Lieberman, a Connecticut Democrat, at the close of a week of intensified political blasts between President Bush and his presumptive Democratic challenger, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.
"Let's keep it civil so we don't get so nasty that we discourage people from coming out and voting in a very important election," Lieberman said on "Fox News Sunday."
So, a couple of Republicans go on Fox and call for a "civil" debate? I guess raucous campaigns are fine only when Democrats don't fight back. The minute they do, there's lots of handwringing over "civility."
The kicker is that Lieberman has the gaul to say this, after slandering real Democrats in the race with "if it were up to you, Saddam would be in power instead of prison." Look for that gem in a future GOP ad showing near you.
Eat shit, Joe Lieberman. Your political career is Joe-ver.
