TOLEDO, Ohio - A coin dealer and prominent GOP fundraiser at the center of an Ohio political scandal pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal charges he illegally funneled donations to President Bush's re-election campaign.
Tom Noe, once a powerful political figure who also raised money for Ohio Republicans, still is charged with embezzlement in an ill-fated $50 million coin investment that he managed for the state workers' compensation fund.
So the money funneled was funny, but you aren't done yet Noe.
Embezzling $50 million from the taxpayers of Ohio is another serious crime. Why not admit all of your wrongdoings? And while you are at it, was there anyone you were working with in the Bush campaign to funnel that money? Inquiring minds want to know.
Update: This is from an old article from the Columbus dispatch. According to prosecutors, Noe faces 175 years on 53 felony counts. Eleven of those counts include money laundering, which seems to fit his guilty pleas.
From the Columbus Dispatch
The charges include engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, 11 counts of theft, 11 of money laundering, 8 of tampering with records and 22 of forgery. He could be sentenced to a maximum 175 years in prison, although such a sentence is considered unlikely.
However, Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien said Noe faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years behind bars if he is convicted of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, a first-degree felony patterned after the federal racketeering law often used against suspected mobsters.
