I read the diaries here at kos regularly; however, this is my first actual entry. Just to give a little background...I live in Texas (oh, the shame! ;-) and my family is extremely conservative--so conservative that I'm not quite sure how I escaped it. :-) (We are actually originally from the midwest--and my mom's parents are dems--but my mom is remarried to a native Texan.) My mom and stepdad are very passionate and vocal about their political beliefs (wrong as they may be), and now that November `04 is approaching, we can't seem to have a single conversation without it turning into something like this:
Me: did you watch the SOTU last night?
Mom: yes, I LOVE our president. I think he is doing an AWESOME job.
Me: hmm, really.
Mom: yes, those greedy democrats just want to take power back. They can't even say what he's doing wrong.
Me: oh yeah?
Mom: yes, I mean, Bush has never told a lie.
Me: snort
Mom: and did you see Hillary? That witch!

[snip]
Mom: I can't understand why you would want homosexuals to get married.
Me: well, it's discrimination not to.
Mom: should we allow pedophiles to get married?!
Me: no, because pedophilia is a crime.
Mom: make gay marriage legal and God will punish this country.
Me: Mom, if gay people get equal rights and America falls apart because of it, I will vote republican for the rest of life. How's that?
Mom: this country's already falling apart.
Me: ah. so, in your mind, how is it that Bush is not accountable for that?
Mom: well, he's only been in office for 3 years.

Sometimes the things she says sound so illogical that I just need to tell someone. :-)
