Looks like another primary election with dismal to record-low turnout.

Update: What a wild ride this has become, huh? Kudos to Virginia for getting results in so quickly and efficiently.

Update II: Fairfax (in NoVa) is coming in strong for Webb. Enough to offset Miller's advantages elsewhere? It looks tight.

    or else this site might as well just go away, if it and the people who use it want to be regarded as a serious winning force. The other side has a gazillion of these in their pocket, going in to the day of the election.

    Hammer on turnout and lose. For these primaries, they've got a bunch of leisurely old farts. (Yeah I understand both candidates in this thread are ours, in some sense.)

    Free up the willing hands. No one willing to drive our side to the polls should have to be troubled with voting on the day of...

    Elections are won in between the time the final absentee ballots first become available and are lost by some side, the day all the ballots are counted. Work on getting as many votes as possible the whole time or forget it. The Repugs just spent $100/vote to defeat Busby. What do you think is the likelihood that these were dollars at one time, in some form, taken against the defecit? They know no decency or limit.

    I'll be shocked if absentee ballots don't account for a good chunk of the upcoming decisions.

    I am calling this one. Charlottesville just came in huge for Webb, and nobody got more Harris Miller mailings and robocalls than we C-villians.  We are the furthest to the left you can get in Virginia, so Webb's win here means he has real support.  Bring on Allen!

      Norfolk and VA Beach haven't started reporting. Looking at the areas nearby that ARE reporting - Hampton, Portsmouth, Newport News - Miller is leading big in heart of Tidewater. Sure, Webb got York and Williamsburg, but I need to see something positive from the big cities.

    but I feel this needs to be viewed.  The numbers at the top are not as important as the numbers here.  If you click that link to can see that more of the districts that lean strong for Webb have fewer precincts reporting.  I'm no electoral expert, but I got a hunch that means that Webb's lead isn't going to decrease much and that's he's just about in the clear now.

        The 2005 Virginia Primary saw disastrously low voter turnout.  We all pretty much predicted doom.  However, in the general election, we saw a very good turnout and a big Democratic win.  Also in early 2005, we had really low turnout for the LA mayoral primary and the general election.  Yet in the 2005 Special Election, turnout was much bigger than was expected (and planned for by the Republicans) and we defeated soundly all of Arnold's iniatives.

          primaries and special elections frequently have low turnout.  Granted, usually not THIS low (perhaps someone forgot to let the voters know?).  But just as with CA-50, I'm not terribly surprised that turnout isn't stellar.

          The 2006 Congressional elections will be a very different story, though -- looks like the GOP is beginning to put it's "hyper-charge the base" strategy in place with gays, immigrants and Iraq.  I don't know how well that will work this time, but if it does, we'd fricken' better figure out a way to get Democrats to the polls.

          •  Here's my idea to counter

            We need to run really strong absentee ballot programs especially among minority voters.  We also should consider this for younger voters.  Why is this important?  It will help give us assured votes, not just estimated election day votes.  It will undoubtedly lower lines at voting booths (which are notoriously low in minority precints) and allow us to get extra voters during election day.  Also towards the closing of the campaign, if we've got a good chunk of the base already having voted, we can really focus in on all the swing voters.

    as many people turn out for the primary for CD 011, than the Republicans have had for CD 008, and they have twice as many registered voters?  Is that a sign of things to come...that they are not going to turn out?  That they really are disgusted with their party?  Or is it just wishful thinking?

    •  8th district is ridiculously blue

      8th District was gerrymandered to be extraordinarily blue.  So nobody has a chance against Moran, comments about why we are in Iraq or no.

      11th District was gerrymandered red (they took Republicans out of Moran's district and put them in Davis's in 2000) but it's a part of the state that is only slightly red now - Davis won 60/40 against generic no-name no-campaign Democrat in 2004 and that was the closest it had been for him - and in 2006 I think it will be closer than that - probably 55/45 or so.  Hurst doesn't have much of a chance but has a better chance than the sucker against Moran in VA-8 especially since Davis has like a 120% rate of voting with Bush and nobody likes Bush.

    of the inside issues but maybe what I know from my own investigation is more widespread knowledge than I assumed.  

    Is Miller known to be an industry shill, for example, selling the bill of goods that 'tests prove' electronic voting is A-ok with him while he represented an industry whose constituency included the electronic voting manufacturers association (in effect: yup he spoke for DIebold!).

    Is that part of the general picture around Harrison Miller?

    I was just watching the local news and they said the exact same thing.  Webb wasn't even working the polls today...but they did show his volunteers making phone calls to get people out to the polls.

    In my neighborhood, there were several signs up to remind people to vote today. I think they were put up by the Fairfax County Democrats.

  Miller now leads 51-48%, but still very early. I'm not getting a read on where these votes are coming from. If they are coming from NVA then, when Tidewater VA reports, I hope that Webb will take th lead. If they are coming from Tidewater VA then Miller will probably win :(.

    The Unions hate Miller because he is a corporatist who supports outsourcing high-paying technology jobs, and he has no crossover appeal to the rank-and-file.

    Miller happened however to have $1 million to throw into the campaign.  As he's only worth $50 million I think he's probably shot most of his wad that he's willing to put into the campaign.  The only thing Miller has shown is that he's willing to get knee deep in the slime and lie about his opponent - which may help him against Allen.  I'm tired of wimpy Democrats.  

    I'm pretty pissed that Webb appeared not to even be trying the last 2 weeks of the campaign.  Miller's ad blitz has convinced many people that he's a Democrat and Webb isn't.  I don't know if the John Kerry robocalls for Webb helped at all.  Guess we'll see.

  District 8 hosts both Fairfax and Arlington counties...stuff I read earlier (I can't find it now.. anyone else?) indicated that Arlington and McLean (in fairfax) would be key indicators.

      I haven't been in the DC area for almost two years, but I still have ties there and pay attention to what's going on.

      Just bitched at my sister earlier for not voting... she moved from NoVA to elsewhere in the state.  She didn't vote in the last election cuz she hadn't gotten her registration fixed... and I kind of gave her the benefit of the doubt because they had just moved.  But again, this time?  "I didn't get my registration in time." Bah.

      I told her to vote provisional, but I don't think it happened.

  0% in both the Dem 11th primary and Republican 8th Primary - that's Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax and parts of Prince William (which isn't really NoVa  but anyway).  

  Here is My Diary from 3 hours ago on why I'm really worried about this one - check out my poll - 0 Virginian Miller supporters - but my dad was adamant that he had to vote for "the real democrat" - he bought Miller's propoganda.

      means having staff/volunteers at the polling places doing things like handing out literature about the candidate (while being sure to stay outside the no-campaign zone designated by law) and exit polling, making sure your candidate's signs are displayed, being on hand to help voters who may have a problem, that sort of thing.  However, most candidates don't do this at every precinct, certainly not in a primary like this one.  My polling place today was all but deserted--the election workers were delighted to see every voter just to break up the monotony.

•  Reminder about Virginia Election Rules...

  ... absentee ballots must be received on or before election day, not postmarked.  Absentee ballots are supposed to be counted on election night.  When I voted in person absentee I voted on a touch screen machine (with no paper trail, of course.  Guess my vote will be counted for Miller even though I chose Webb).

I think Webb can continue Virginia's slide to the Blue. Really upset about about Moran's "Earmark" quote, combined with his net neutrality stance - may have to cast protest vote with the independent who is running.

  To smart and capable people like Webb everywhere...

  Don't think you can get away with helping to give us bad politicians like Bush and Allen, or even Reagan, no matter how popular that seems to be at the time.

  I think Webb was the right choice in this but, in primaries and generals, we are seeing people whose liberal credentials are questionable go down. Instead of pointing to these cases as near-successes I think we should look instead for ways to make the liberal cred the base needs have the crossover appeal that the voters on the other sides---Presumably---Would feel for party-flippers.

    was a vocal critic of (at least most) affirmative action programs and Miller wasted no time in riding that horse as far as he could.  I don't know if that's been significantly boosting support for Miller within the black community or not, but given the sensitive politics of primaries, that could be the factor that makes all the difference.

      What Webb said is that he was in favor of affirmative action but that it needed to be expanded so that it wasn't race based but rather socio-economic based so that people who were poor whites would get some advantage too.  I guess that this could be construed as being against race-based affirmative action but I took away from that that Webb wants to help poor people regardless of race - we need to reach out to all our disadvantaged.  

      Personally I think that there are a disproportionate number of poor folks who are also racial minorities so I understand the appeal of race-based affirmative action, but I think that we can't leave poor white people behind just because they are white.

  Watching everyone here is like watching my daughters when they were 6 and 3 waiting for Santa Claus to come!!! Just chill out and wait before everyone blows a gasket.  If you go to the website that shows the vote tally its changing almost instantaneously. One second I looked at it and Miller had a 7 point lead. Next time I looked they were 1 points apart.  Rather than freaking out lets take deep breaths and think about how good we'll feel at 10:00 pm when the numbers have had a chance to stabilize, districts all over the state have reported in, and Webb is the clear winner.  We need as many D's as possible voting in Virginia in November...we dont need you stroking out in June!

  Maybe its time to take a Jimmy Buffett break and come back to watch the poll results in 30 minutes?
