One of the many attacks on the middle class the republicans are trying to institute is an attack on the current bankruptcy laws. Of course when WorldCom or Enron goes belly up that's one thing, but we certainly can't let those uppity "middle classers" think they can use the bankruptcy laws to help get their lives back together. Of course it's their own fault for buying too much stuff on credit right? Apparently not.
Maybe everybody already read
this column in the WaPo but in case you didn't, go take a gander. 1 million people who filed for bankruptcy last year did so because of healthcare costs that literally ate them alive. Many of these people lost their jobs because of their illness, "compassionate conservatism" at its best.
I suppose it would be rather obvious to point to this as another reason to go to a single payer national system. Yeah it would, but it might behoove the Democrats to sart giving this particular angle a little more pla. After all I think most of us know someone who has become catastrophically ill, enough to spend quite some time in the hospital and rack up some nasty medical bills.
