Lieberman Should Respect Primary Vote
"Senator Joe Lieberman has been a strong, long-time supporter of bedrock Democratic Party values. However, many Connecticut Democrats are understandably disappointed with the senator's continued support of the president's failed stay-the-course strategy. Lieberman's announcement today that he would run as an independent should he lose to Ned Lamont in the primary is sadly more about self-preservation than representing the interests of voters," says Tim Carpenter, National Director of Progressive Democrats of America.
"Right now, the Democratic Party is having a much needed debate about what to do about Iraq . If primary voters decide Lieberman's support of the war is reason to withdraw their support for Lieberman, the senator should respect their decision and refrain from entering the race as an independent, rather than prolong the Party's divide into the November election. Whatever the outcome, Democrats should remember it was President George W. Bush who misled Congress and the American people on Iraq ."
