I looked and can't find a diary on the Illinois-Arizona game last night. And, I confess that (1) I was born and raised in Illinois; (2) I have been educated at universities in Illinois (Northwestern, UIC, UIUC, (3)I am a Cub fan, and (4) in 1989, the last time Illinois was a final four team, I was completing my post graduate degree at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
However, if you missed last night's game between Illinois and Arizona, you missed one of the great comebacks in recent sports history in the US.
With three minutes left, Illinois was behind by 14 points.
This morning I was reading Kansas City Star's sports columnist
Joe Posanski on the game. I gave it to my wife to read. She initially resisted because she NEVER reads about sports.
Here is part of Posnanski's column.
Nobody could believe it. Illinois was going to lose! These Illini were 35-1. They had been No. 1 just about the whole season. . . .
Another Chicago heartbreak, that's all. Even when Illinois guard Luther Head hit a three-point shot and the deficit was cut to 11, nobody blinked. . . .
Of course, before those three minutes were up, the unbelievable had happened.
The only reality television worth watching is sport. And, last night, even this Cub fan learned to never, ever give up.
As dark as the political situation is right now, we must not ever give up.
