Fighting Dem Phil Avillo raised $59,667--more than double that of incumbent Todd Platts, who gathered $25,755 during the quarter closing June 30.
Folks, this is amazing for several reasons. In this district, Republicans outnumber Democrats by a 2-1 ratio. Secondly, we haven't had a Democrat represent the citizens of this area in Congress for more than 40 years. The winds of change are a-blowin'.
Thirdly, everyone keeps saying this is a safe "republican" district--even the people here at dkos keep saying it. Don't believe it (and stop saying it). People in Pennsylvania want change on every level of government. If you're an incumbent, you're immediately viewed with suspicion.
Fourthly, look at the numbers! This is an incredibly cheap seat. By throwing a few coins to this campaign, you are getting a lot of bang for your buck.
Lastly, Phil is a
great candidate. He's smart, talented and passionate. And he's a decorated Marine veteran. That means a lot to voters, especially when so many in the Bush Administration and the current Congress haven't served.
Here's Phil from yesterday's press release
"People in York, Adams and Cumberland counties are disturbed by the poor government management of natural disasters, the poor oversight of the federal budget, the missed opportunities in combating the war on terror, a looming healthcare crisis and unstable energy resources," Avillo said.
"And they recognize that Mr. Platts has been on the wrong side of virtually every significant vote concerning these issues."
Look for the momentum to keep building...
