I always check out the cartoons on Time.com - usually there are some nice selections.
Today I found one that I felt was OTT, dealing with the fact that Islamic extremists are already inside Europe, and it reminded me of a notorious Der Stürmer (Nazi propaganda publication) front page.
See and compare below the fold.
Time takes cartoons from various sources, seemingly seeking to find a balance between conservatives and liberals in their selection. Here's one commenting upon the threat to Europe:
And, yes, there is a threat - it was "a shock" to Blair that the terrorists who struck against London were from Britain. Yet this kind of cartoon seems to serve only one purpose, that of alienating the white Europeans from Muslims, by lighting up under the sense of fear such an action will cause.
An exaggeration? I don't think so. Look at how Der Stürmer dealt with the same topic, when it wasn't Muslims but Jews that one had to get rid of.
Both cartoons deal with "the enemy" already having gotten inside "our part of the world" and attacking our women - doddering old Europe granny, or the woman who has fallen victim to the wily Jew that Goebbels loved to portray to fire up Germans against the Jews who lived among them.
So - where will it take us? There are lots of reports of anti-Muslim hate crimes in Britain in the days since July 7th. When does it reach the point where it becomes "legitimate defence"?
By running such a cartoon, Time is sanctioning the irrational fears that could drive us to commit hate crimes.
