Yes it may sound like an oxymoron to say that having Alito raised to the Supreme Court would be a good thing for creating a progressive American body politic. However, it may be that Alito on the court, and the likely overturning of Roe, might just be the best thing for progressive politics in the USA. It may very well have the effect of politicizing the large plurality of Americans that are currently apolitical who will realize that the access to abortion they have taken for granted and which the majority of Americans support may be withdrawn.
Sometimes to move forward, it is necessary to take a few steps backwards. I think that with the American public today that might very well be the case. Only 3 in 5 vote in presidential elections, less for Congress, state and local office. Could it be that this is because many Americans believe that the social changes wrought by the Generation of '68 are simply not going to be reversed. Politicians on both side fulminate about reversing Roe or defending Roe, but that debate has been going on since Roe and it is still valid. Two generations of women have grown up in a Roe-based environment concerning the principle that they are masters of their own body. Few understand that the Supreme Court has a history of reversing itself on rulings over controversial issues, and that Roe could very well be one of those issues.
Alito gets onto the court, and in the next two years Roe is overturned. Consider the shock waves this is likely to create in the body politic. Overturning Roe will launch a massive campaign by the right to restrict or eliminate abortion access in the states and, perhaps, at the federal level. It could very well be that the abortion battle has to be fought again in all fifty states. And if that is the case, the result would likely be a rapid reawakening of the pro-choice movement as the apolitical 40% of the population that has taken Roe for granted as permanent realize that the battle will have to be fought again.
In the end the apolitical only involve themselves in politics when their own personal lives are affected directly by political decisions. The scramble that will result should Roe be overturned will, I think, revive the movement towards a more progressive American society.
I am not in favor of Alito being raised to the Supreme Court, but should that be the result, it could very well help to revive an interest in progessive politics that has been lacking since the Reagan Revolution. But sometimes a step backwards has to be endured in order to continue future progress forwards.
