I was a caller on Randi Rhodes' show today and spoke about this.
Randi's point (as I understand it): Graner should have been acquitted because "he was following orders." The real criminals are at the top of the chain of command, not the bottom. Graner believed that the order he was given was legal.
Sarah's point: Graner deserved to be convicted, and to argue otherwise is to validate the Nuremburg Defense. Justice will truly be served when everyone involved is convicted. Graner deserved to be convicted because his own morality alarm never went off to even question such an order. Better to stand Captain's Mast than to execute an order like that.
I wasn't able to make this point on the air but I believe that it is the same as the Mafia hit-man: He is just as guilty as the Don who gave the order. Both go to prison.
