Surrounded constantly by right-wing cruel (yes, I say cruel) propaganda and beliefs in the USA makes many hunger to seek out others who believe in compassion, feeding the hungry, not killing people in other countries to steal their stuff, and other wimpy, left-wing things. You just don`t seem to get this much on television, radio, or newspapers; they all seem to be either extremely or moderately jingoist, always pro-US, always toting the "support the troops" and other blind routines.
Fox News is seen as the most glaring example of the problem with all the major US media/news sources, and with good reason: I think it IS the most glaring. Unfortunately, it is also, in its own way, the most honest. It makes no attempt to hide its jingoism, and does not pretend to have any other goal than the advocacy of US imperialism and, more specifically, the Republican party.
I see many with views contrary to this wishing that the major US news media outlets would change or contest this, most especially the big television sources. The problem is, these news agencies are not pro-big business... they ARE big business! Sorry to sound like a ranting extremist, but they have a vested interest in seeing things go on as they are. They profit from this. Fox News is the most blatant, but where it really counts, it does not at all stand out alone. We won`t be seeing wealthy politicians or giant corporations becoming regularly friendly to left-wing views any time soon, as this would be going against their personal interests.
I`m really glad of the Internet, since someone who is not a big business can open a forum for discussion and sharing of information. And if there has to be slant, I`d rather have slant in favour of the common people. But I don`t think it`s enough, since those who ought to be exposed to views in opposition to the regular medicine they get off the TV don`t go out of their way to seek those views. It`s uncomfortable to them to see someone say the USA is the bad guy, or to point out that it`s hypocritical to oppose abortion while bombing thousands of people on the other side of the world. The rare times they do encounter this, such as a personal conversation with a "left-wing extremist", they have a small but mind-numbing arsenal of responses such as "if you don`t like this country than move out", or "the USA isn`t perfect but [insert brainless irrelevancy here]".
What`s the solution? Is there one? In a culture where money rules all, can you fight those who possess and control it?
