UPDATE: I don't ask for recommends, but I think this story should be widely read since it ties in with Crashing the Gate. So please recommend.
I sent an email to the HRC a few weeks ago to suss out their position on Lieberman, mostly to see whether or not their position would change after the primary. It hasn't---they are still endorsing that schmuck.
This is shameful, in my mind, and I'm pissed. I will never support the HRC with another penny of my money. I just wish I could get back what I've given to them over the years. UGH.
(letter from HRC below the fold)
Dear Tim,
Thank you for taking the time to contact the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) about our endorsement of United States Senator Joe Lieberman (CT). His re-election campaign has been one of the most watched races in the country and HRC has given a great deal of thought to our decision.
The HRC Political Action Committee (PAC) is nonpartisan; it supports candidates regardless of party affiliation and based on his or her record on issues important to GLBT Americans. In evaluating an endorsement, HRC PAC considers a variety of factors, including incumbency and the candidate's voting record on GLBT issues. While a candidate's stance on a broad range of policy areas is obviously important to voters and our members, our endorsement decision focuses exclusively on issues related to GLBT equality.
The HRC PAC endorsed Joe Lieberman's in his 2006 bid for re-election to the U.S. Senate several months ago. This decision was based upon his record as one of HRC's strongest allies in the U.S. Senate and his unwavering support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality that dates back three decades.
Senator Lieberman's rating on our congressional scorecard has been consistently high, with several 100% ratings. Almost every time HRC has called upon him, he has stepped up, providing leadership in the Senate and twice voting against the discriminatory Federal Marriage Amendment.
Additionally, Senator Lieberman has co-sponsored and worked to gain support in the Senate for important bills that would address domestic partner benefits, early treatment for HIV, hate crimes prevention and employment non-discrimination.
Senator Lieberman stood with us early on, when others wouldn't. And he continues to be one of our strongest allies in the Senate.
We appreciate your feedback about this endorsement.
Sincerely,
Joe Solmonese
Human Rights Campaign President
