I'm going to excerpt from an AP article which highlights the valuable role that Janet Reno is going to play in Betty Castor's campaign. You'll remember that Janet Reno ran for Governor of Florida in 2002. She lost the primary, but she remains uniquely popular among liberals, african-americans, and South Florida Democrats generally. She is backing Betty, and Reno's star power is already being felt:
At the Cypress Lakes Democratic Club, Janet Reno's introduction brings the audience to their feet - even an elderly woman with an oxygen tube under her nose rises in applause.
Two years ago, the former U.S. attorney general narrowly lost the Democratic primary for governor. But her star power still sells in the retirement communities that dot the coast of southeast Florida, where voters admire her independent streak and consider her a bridge to former President Clinton.
She is hoping this popularity can help her friend, former state Education Commissioner Betty Castor, win August's U.S. Senate primary.
"People ask me 'What are you doing these days, Janet?'" Reno told more than 200 party activists Thursday night at the retirement community, where a disco ball hangs from the ceiling of the club house. "And one of the things I tell them is that I'm doing everything I can to see that Betty Castor is elected."
