Hi guys and gals.. I briefly posted about this in a Katrina Thread yesterday about the Canadian Government releasing an official statement offering aid and help to the US. I'll re-post that, as well as an official release from the Prime Minister of Canada Paul Martin today on his support for the US - both moral and for any physical aid that the US thinks we can help you out with.
First: The Canadian Government Press Release yesterday:
August 30 - The Government of Canada today issued the following statement in support of those who have endured the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina in the United States:
“On behalf of all Canadians, I wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones as a result of Hurricane Katrina, as well as our sympathies to those who have suffered great losses and personal hardship,” said Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan. “During this difficult time, we are offering our support to our friends and neighbours.”
The Deputy Prime Minister added that she has contacted U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and advised him that Canada stands ready to provide assistance if needed. In addition, the Minister of Health, Ujjal Dosanjh, has directed the Public Health Agency of Canada to contact the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and offer any assistance that may be helpful, such as emergency medical supplies contained in the National Emergency Stockpile System.
This afternoon, Prime minister Paul Martin issued this statement:
Statement by the Prime Minister on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
August 31, 2005
Ottawa, Ontario
"Like all Canadians, I am distressed by the destruction and loss of life wrought by Hurricane Katrina. On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I offer our sincere condolences to the American people. During this most difficult time, Canada stands with you, and we are ready to provide whatever support you may require in the days, weeks and months ahead.
"Even before the enormity of the devastation became clear, I asked Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan to lead the Government of Canada's response to any requests for assistance. We are continuing to monitor the situation closely. I know that she and a number of her Cabinet colleagues have been in touch with their American counterparts and have begun to determine what assistance Canada can offer. We have made it clear that we are prepared to offer any and all possible assistance, and we will continue to work closely with our neighbours as they deal with this terrible event."
The reason I post this is: I've seen folks like Jack Cafferty on CNN and a caller or two to Larry King Live wondering where the International Community was with offers of aid. I've written into them and Aaron Brown with the first link informing them of this.. but I've seen no mention anywhere of the offered aid from Canada.
This post is just to make everyone aware here that your friends to the north will give you aid if you need it.
Just ask.
