Oh thank God for President Bush, our savior, who took his sweet time to aid the city of New Orleans from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Just today in the New York Times there comes word that he is giving his attention to the rebuilding effort including generous federal financing for homeowners with which to rebuild their neighborhoods. Buyer beware! Nothing will be as it was. The system of levees and floodwalls are weaker now than they were prior to Katrina. The infrastructure has not been built up. The guidelines for where to move and how to build are not reliable. People of color take heed! Reparations are wolves in sheep's clothing. If Mother Nature decides to strike once again, the homes will be even less secure than they were. Yet people are moving back into what could be deathtraps. Now is not the time to absolve yourself, President Bush. No patchwork will ease your guilt. You will have to atone in the future for an even greater tragedy.
