Remember the Dilbert Clipboard Principle?
"You can go anywhere you want if you look serious and carry a clipboard."
The GOP is carrying around a big ass clipboard called Katrina & they have promised to take a "good hard look" at the problem & Gol-durn-it! do something!
SO, after running around the hallways for SEVEN months, going to meeting after useless meeting, what did their intense sessions produce?
They want to scrap FEMA & replace it with, um, another FEMA but um, it'll be waaaaay heckuva (Brownie) lot better because it's, well, named the NPRA.
Describing FEMA as a "shambles and beyond repair," Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine said the reforms "will help ensure that we do not have a repeat of the failures following Hurricane Katrina."
This con is called the Ole Switcheroo! Offer one thing & give 'em something else!
See, you didn't want a car - no! You wanted a glove.
You didn't want real solutions to Katrina that would save lives and prepare the country for another disaster. Noooo!
You wanted FEMA to be scraped & for us to rebuild the whole damn thing from scratch, RENAME IT, and um, then give it the same powers it had prior to when you came in & F^^KED it all up!
Former FEMA director Michael Brown - of heckuva job, Brownie fame - who actually has been very critical of Homeland Security & Bush's government has this to say about the changes:
"It sounds like they're just re-creating the wheel and making it look like they're calling for change," Brown said. "If indeed that's all they're doing, they owe more than that to the American public."
Yes. The American people DO deserve better.
They deserve REAL solutions from a political party that has been more concerned about covering its own ass as opposed to protecting the American people.
During the 1st three days of Katrina, I was disgusted to find out that Condi Rice was shopping for shoes:
that George Bush & John McCain were eating cake (literally!):
& playing country music star
WHILE people and the Gulf Coast were DYING:
& In case you forgot about how bad Katrina was, here's a Photo Essay on 9/11 & Katrina
But the bottom-line is that the American people deserve a government that will actually protect them - and not one that throws their clipboard and acts like they are doing something!
Renaming FEMA is not enough. Give it the powers - that you took away - to do its job & STOP hiring horse trainers to handle EMERGENCY operations.
These guys are still treating this like a game & we will pay the price when another emergency happens.
