In layman's terms he says the obvious, which is essentially, "when your boss tells you to go out and defend his position, you only have two choices... do what he says or quit."
More specifically Buchanan talks about when he was on the staff of Nixon's white house and Nixon decided to go to China. Buchanan argued forcefully against the trip, reasoning that shaking hands with the communists undermined America's position on the war in Vietnam. Nixon disagreed, scheduled the trip and then told Buchanan to write the very speeches praised the communist leaders that Buchanan despised to his very core.
What'd Buchanan do? He wrote the speeches.
What did he do the moment he left the administration? Scream to anyone that would listen that those speeches he had written were a disaster.
