So, what is with the non-stop Apocalypse coverage on CNN lately?
Are we supposed to think that every time the Middle East (or more particularly, Israel) erupts in violence approaching the level of open conventional warfare, the end is nigh?
Why is CNN going on endlessly about "The end of times" - is it near? instead of focusing on the REAL threats to life on the planet?
more ranting below.......
Now I was raised Christian - in a "literal interpretation of the Bible" denomination - but have long since dropped that approach to "God" et. al.
An in-depth analysis of the origins of Christianity and the compilation of the Bible leads any rational person to the realization that "literal interpretation" doesn't work.... the Gospels don't even agree with each other. A very interesting conversation with one of the products of my old denomination's seminary showed that even the clergy had been educated with a far wider view of Christianity's origins than the "official" line. But that isn't the point here.....
History has had recurringly had apocalyptic sects predicting the end of the world..... but it never ends as predicted (though many followers of such sects seem to have an unnaturally early end to their own lives .
As far as the Bible goes, despite the clear belief of many fundamentalist types, it makes more sense to read Revelations as a cryptic reference to the Romans and the political situation at the time of Christ...... so what does that have to do with anything NOW? not much.
But some continue to read more and more into current events - eagerly looking forward to the end of mankind..... WHY? Because they think that THEY will survive.......
So what if the world ends if you're going to make it through things fine, off into the heavenly void with Jesus..... I find it a bit disturbing that some fundamentalist Christians are HAPPY about events in Israel - feeling that they bring the end ever closer....
....and if the world is ending anyway, it's a short leap to thinking it doesn't matter if you leave the planet despoiled, entering a cycle of more extreme climate changes...... Why it would be a waste NOT to get all the oil and coal out of the ground before the world ends...... we'd be wasting our God given legacy..... But such attitudes tend to lead to self fulfilling prophecies.
Personally, I want an alternate plan - just in case they're wrong (which given past history - I'm willing to bet they are).
All of this seems to fly in the face of a rational scientific approach to things. It sure flies in the face of the historical record. NONE of the groups predicting the end of times has been right. Why on earth should we think that ANYONE - fundamentalist Christians or any other - have ANY idea when the world will end, or how?
So why is MSM covering this story at all?
Why is MSM covering a minority - a SMALL minority - pov that thinks that events in the Middle East portend the end of the world?, a pov that - if some other religion was involved would likely be decried as absurd as "lunatic" by those so looking forward to the end of times.... After somehow getting involved in a converation with someone telling em that the world is only 6,000 years old, and that it's ending soon, I was a bit disturbed by their irrational and oh so committed pov......
Personally, I'm more worried about the far more real likelyhood of expanded war, drastic climate change, pandemic or whatever else...... and of course that our National Leadership seems to think "the world is ending anyway, it's our duty to speed the process up...." - which seems to be insane but sure explains recent events.......
