Thank God, finally some good news -- a
new poll from the University of South Alabama shows Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley leads Don Siegelman 45-27 with just a week to go before the primary.
A few days ago there was a Survey USA poll that showed a virtual tie in the Democratic race for governor of Alabama between Baxley and Siegelman.
I say thank God because I could not fathom that Alabama Democrats would nominate Siegelman -- a former governor who was ousted four years ago by Bob Riley in the closest governor's race in state history. Siegelman is currently on trial in federal court on corruption charges. It is his second such trial -- having beat the rap the first time.
The MOE on the poll is 5 percent.
Lieutenant governor nearing mark needed to win without runoff
MONTGOMERY -- Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley -- after unveiling a series of policy proposals, starting an advertising campaign and watching her chief rival endure weeks of his federal corruption trial -- has opened an 18-point lead in the Democratic primary for governor, the results of a new statewide survey suggest.
The Press-Register/University of South Alabama poll found Baxley with 45 percent support among self-identified likely Democratic primary voters.
Former Gov. Don Siegelman, who awaits his fate on criminal charges that he traded official actions for campaign cash and personal gifts while in office, drew 27 percent.

USA political scientist Keith Nicholls said the results suggest Baxley is building a strong position -- and potentially burying Siegelman -- with less than two weeks remaining before the June 6 vote.
