I am curious about the extensive use of swear words here, particularly the word "fuck".
I doubt that swearing is any less prevalent in the UK in every day life than it is in the US. Not to do so is often regarded as somehow uncool and being elitist.
It is generally avoided in the more serious UK blogs, however, unless it is one trying to artificially create some street cred. Even then, there is tendency to recognise that certain words can be offensive so they are often not fully spelt out or the abbreviated forms, like "WTF", are used.
Is this a cultural difference between our two countries?
It has taken me some time to get used to it on DKos and to stop being surprised that such intelligent and articulate commentators that post on here so frequently feel the need to give emphasis to their arguments in this way.
It is a bit annoying if I have to learn how to use these words properly in order to communicate effectively, as it may creep into my posts on other sites.
In truth, too, I must declare that I am not very proficient in the art. When I joined my local golf club three or four years ago, one of my much liked golf partners took me on one side after I let forth a torrent of abuse after a particularly bad golf shot and said: "Look, we all have to swear sometimes. The trouble is that you are not very good. If you want to do it, ask one of us to do it for you."
I must admit, he had a point. I have improved at it, which is useful because my golf hasn't.
The trouble is, I don't know if I have learnt enough to match the exceptional ability displayed on DKos. Am I going to be at a disadvantage?
