As 2006 winds to an end in a few hours, we will invariably see many "best of" lists. My favorite are the best movies lists, so I know what to add to my Netflix queue since I'm lucky if I make it to a handful of in-theater flicks per year. Hopefully I'll plan better for next New Year's Eve and be stocked up, this year I'm home with strep with nary a film to watch.
Here are a few gems I did see this year, along with a poll for your choice for the #1 movie of 2006:
An Inconvenient Truth Yes, I know you've all seen it too. Made me so happy to see Al Gore back in his comfort zone that I almost forgave him for his awful 2000 campaign.
The Departed Great film - very Scorsese. Performance by Leonardo DiCaprio caught me off guard - when the hell did he grow up and become so damn hot?
Blood Diamond Yeah, it was a bit preachy - but so what? Child soldiers and slave labor in the name of consumerism deserves a bit of preaching. Left the theater feeling virtuous that I don't own a big rock, preferring an artsy hand-crafted gold band instead. Also left the theater feeling a bit depressed, asking myself "why did I choose to see this on Christmas Day?"
