I probably won't actually spend the entire day watching C-Span, but I'll admit that Democratic-majority control is still so fresh, that I'm having an entertaining morning here. I'll give some observations after the flip.

Firstly, it's really entertaining to watch our new members on the House floor. No matter how polished and articulate they've been on the campaign trail, it is obvious that they are nervous while giving their first speeches in congress. They are doing well, and they'll get more comfortable doing this as they go. At the moment, if you are not watching, they are debating pay-as-you-go rules for the House. Democrats have done well on this, with Spratt, Schuler, and Alcee Hastings making some good points about how fiscally undisciplined the Republicans have been over the past six years.

On a side note, could we please, for the love of GOD, do something about the persistent misuse of "Democrat" the noun as an adjective? I am remarkably fed up with every Republican speaker in this debate referring to their Democratic colleagues as "Democrat majority" and "Democrat leader." It is wrong, and I cannot for the life of me understand why we are allowing this. We certainly have people who are capable of correcting this when it happens.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

democrat thing on purpose. They are ennunciating the "rat" part of it to degrade our party. These guys have no fresh ideas. W does it constantly. I've come to ignore it as there are more important things to be done right now.

We're kicking Republican ass on this. The last Republican speaker was the most singly-insulting speaker I've heard today. Can't remember his name. Some low-life from Georgia. Watching him, I understand why the last congress did nothing.

I watched C-Span1 yesterday and The Repubs are complaining about how unopen the Dems where being.  That that are cutting them out of the process that ever american deserves to be apart of.

The rules they are passing where writen by Repubs with major ethics improvements.

I trust the Dems right now to use these rules to get their promissed legislation passed.  Once that happens, open the rules a little to encourge debate and discussion only after the Dems meet the public needs expressed in these last elections.

  •  This is fascinating to watch ..... (0+ / 0-)

I am watching the House of Reps on CSPAN and this is truly fascinating.  It is so refreshing to see the Democrats finally being heard and in charge.

The fact that the Republicans are so concerned about minority rights now is hilarious.  When they were in control, the Democrats could not get arrested...they were shut out and basically IGNORED.  Hearings in the basement of congress, shutting off microphones, votes in the middle of the night....give me a break.

When Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to Hastert about minority rights...he didn't even respond.

I was in tears yesterday watching the gavel being handed to Nancy Pelosi.  I am overwhelmed with joy to see the Democrats getting started with their 100 hour plan.  I am snxiously awaiting their official statement about the IRAQ escalation surge.
