Up here in Larimer County, things just took a particularly funny turn. As everyone knows by now, local boy and Colorado State alum Wayne Allard announced this week that he isn't running again, opening up a peach-juicy pick-up possibility for the Democrats in the U.S. Senate in 2008. Colorado is turning blue faster than a naked wingnut dropped onto what's left of the Greenland ice sheet...
Fort Collins would surely miss Allard's presence in the World's Most Exclusive Club, but since he was widely considered one of the dimmest bulbs in the Senate, it's just as well to get rid of the embarassment and swap him for a nice greenie Boulderite like Mark Udall. On the whole, Allard's done diddly squat for CSU, which languishes severely underfunded after the years of assaults from the TABOR-Christian alliance in the state legislature while it was controlled by the Rethugs.
Sorry, Wayne, this Loyal Lambkin wishes he could say better things about your distinguished tenure, and heap all manner of thanks on you. To your credit, animal doctor, you haven't yet laid any gawdawful public cringefest on us in the manner of Allen, Frist, or Burns. No doubt a scrutiny of your record will reveal a few things worthy of a modest encomium, but you screwed up big time from the start by aligning yourself with the Neoconfederate Agenda. You were given the Creator's Chance to serve in the greatest legislative body in the history of mankind--the United States Congress--yet you have used your solemn time there largely to further the agenda of Government of the Elite over that of the People. You surely would have lost, had you run again. It is much better that you leave with a modicum of honor intact as you are doing. On that count, good show.
Being in Colorado lately is a pure pleasure, from a political perspective. It gives one a sneak peek at what's going to be happening nationwide over the next election cycle, as the Hate Crowd starts to melt away, leaving the Democrats in charge, whether they are ready or not.
