(UPDATE: Read my follow up diary on what to do next)
Watching Senator Webb, I couldn't help but think how close we were to having George "Stay the Course" Allen in that seat. Listening to him describe economic inequality (a topic rarely discussed by any politician) and taking it to Bush on the war (something he's done since 2003), I couldn't help thinking about the monumental decision from leaving his comfortable private life to serve the American people again. Seeing him point to his grandfather's photo and refer Presidents Roosevelt and Eisenhower, I couldn't help to think how close we were to not having his insight, his compassion, his toughness in the Democratic majority. Heck, how close we were to not having a majority at all in the Senate.
So, thank you Senator Webb. Not just for your wonderful speech tonight, but for serving the American people as Senator in the first place.
