Today on NPR Ann Garrels, who has been in Iraq for the duration, reported that Moqtada al Sadr has told the Mahdi Army to sit down and shut up. She says further that Sunni, Shia and Kurdish leaders have agreed to use the US troop increase to bring a measure of peace and stability to Baghdad and to Iraq,
People are saying the right things, according to Garrels, signaling that the Iraqis may have had enough of this terrible civil war.
I combed the rest of the MSM, and the blogs for another
source on this and found nothing.
While I was combing, I considered what George Packer has referred to as the 'moral position of the left: if Bush's policiy succeeds in Iraq, the left loses. But if Bush doesn't succeed in Iraq, Iraqis and US troops lose. Naturally, I wanted to tell Packer where to stick it- the presumptuous, insulting, self-righteous ass-but I found myself feeling a twinge when I heard Garrels report: Don't let the nauseating twit (Bush) succeed!
Let's grant that all good Southpaws sincerely want the bloodletting to stop. But what of it does?
