So much smoke has been blown about "The War on Terrorism" that we've lost sight of the simplest things. Why do they hate us? Why were we attacked on 9/11?
The 9/11 highjackers attacked us because they were pissed off at American foreign policy in the Middle East. Support of corrupt dictators like the House of Saud and yes, even Saddam Hussein (Who sold him the poison gas he used on his own people?) protected the interests of Big Oil at the expense of ordinary citizens. In short, "U.S. Big Bully: Unfair to Muslims!"
So, if the problem is pissed-off Muslims, why is the solution pissing off even more Muslims by occupying Iraq like some kind of big, unfair-to-Muslims bully?
You can't put out a fire by pouring gasoline on it. You can't solve political problems with an army. You can't mollify someone who's mad at you by being nasty to them. You can't prove you're not a bully by beating people up, and you can't prove you're not a murderer by killing two thirds of a million Iraqis.
It's insane to think you can make people like you by shooting them. If large numbers of Muslim nationalists are willing to kill themself to harm us, maybe it's time to stop and figure out why they're so mad. If our foreign policy was/is bad enough to make millions of enemies, maybe we should re-examine our policies.
Nobody attacks a country for being too fair and just.
OK: Go ahead and call me an America-hater.
