Just about everybody has a cure for what ails education---charter schools, magnet schools, vouchers, choice, new technology, flexible scheduling, alternative staffing, more money, less money, longer school days, longer school years, year-round schooling, merit pay, abolition of tenure, closing schools of education, abolishing tenure, grade retention, school ranking, public humiliation, more testing, tougher discipline, smaller schools.....
But decade after decade, when all the relevant variables are taken into account, student performance remains basically flat.
Tomorrow (Saturday), around 8 AM, I'll claim that the main reason is the "core" curriculum, and suggest what needs to be done.
