As your body grows BIGGER!
Your Mind will FLOWER!!!
It's GREAT to learn
'Cause KNOWLEDGE is POWER!!!
It's School House Rocky, a chip off the block of your favorite School House, School House ROCK!!!
Last week I ordered by mail the 30th Anniversary two-disc set of School House Rock. I got it, because as a child of the 70's I found myself looking more forward to them than to the actual cartoons for which they served as intermission. I wanted to share these memories with my children, and hope that they not only enjoy them as much as I did, but that they actually learn from them. The first viewing was such a success!
It is hard for me to pinpoint a favorite. We set it to play random selections from the different categories, like Multiplication Rock, Grammar Rock, Money Rock, Science Rock, and America Rock. I just asked my daughter to put Disc One in again, so we can enjoy it as I write this diary.
The other night, when we first watched, I was struck by how much of it I remembered, and my kids thought I was nuts singing along to "Lolly Lolly Lolly Get Your Adverbs Here!"
I knew the words to that, and to "Interjections!" and "Conjunction Junction," and who could forget "Unpack Your Adjectives?" I am sure that is the one that scarred Stephen Colbert (He was a hairy bear, he was a scary bear, we beat a hasty retreat from his lair!)
Right now, Willie, my two and a half year old son, is dancing to Conjunction Junction (no matter what the musical style, all of his dance moves look like the "Safety Dance". It is really funny stuff!)
Now I have a friend named Rufus Xavier Sarsparilla, and he taught me all about pronouns...
And Lynn Ahrens taught me about the Preamble to the US Constitution...and when I studied the Constitution in my first College Poli-Sci class, I caught myself singing it...We the people, in order to form a more perfect union, Establish justice domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty, to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Consitition, for the United States (Ooo-of)America! (Yeah who would have thunk that could be so musical???
Thanks to School House Rock I can actually multiply in my head! 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24, 27, 30...Yeah, thirty.
You KNOW three is the magic number, after all...
Could anything be more joyful, innocent, educational, and inspirational than School House Rock? As Willie Safety Dances around the room to "Elbow Room" I say to myself, "I think NOT!"
So, Kossacks, I ask...What's YOUR favorite School House Rock?
