I was watching Real Time with Bill Maher just now and heard Bill and writer David Mamet (Wag the Dog, etc) discuss a comment Mamet made about the Democrats not knowing how to play poker.
Basically, Mamet's theory is that the Democrats call, call, call and never raise. The example they used was that when Kerry was swiftboated he should have responded with "So what? Bush is a deserter!"
An excellent example of how an understanding of poker would held our Democrats occurred this week when Dick Cheney made his remarks about Pelosi and the Democrats playing onto Al Qaeda's hands. the response should not have been "I'm going to call the President" (who, by the way, didn't even take her call), but a response of "Bullshit. Why the hell would anybody listen to him. Look where he's gotten us."
The one thing I do like about Hillary Clinton, and probably the only thing, is that she does not sit back and let people attack without fighting back.
The rest of the crew probably could learn a thing or two if they would buy Doyle Brunson's book on poker, or even just take a couple of hours a week to watch it on television. If all you ever do is call bets, and then only when it is safe, you are just going to call and ante yourself out of the game.
If you want to be a bear, be a Grizzly bear.
