Information being hyped, rhetoric growing more belligerent, threats increasingly exaggerated and Wes Clark warning about the dangers and advising next steps to avoid certain catastrophe.
Sound familiar?
In recent years, it has been of little comfort to see that, when people are able to see General Clark's statements about Iraq, they see that he has been right all along and wish that people would have only paid attention and heeded his concerns about moving forward with our actions in the Middle East.
(Senate Armed Services Hearing on Iraq, Sept 23, 2002)
Senator Max Cleland: ...if you took out Saddam Hussein and the Baath party, the secularist party, don't the Sunnis and the Shiite Muslims make up a majority of the population in Iraq, and wouldn't that give Iran a strong hand there and we ultimately end up creating a Muslim state even under Democratic institutions?
Wesley Clark: Are you asking..
Senator Max Cleland: Yes Sir.
Wesley Clark: Yes Sir, I think there's a substantial risk in the aftermath of the operation that we could end up with a problem which is more intractable than we have today. One thing we're pretty clear on is that Saddam has a very effective police state apparatus. He doesn't allow challenges to his authority inside that state. When we go in there with a transitional government and a military occupation of some indefinite duration, it's also very likely that if there is an effective Al-Quaeda left, and there certainly will be an effective organization of extremists, they will pour into that country. Because they must compete for the Iraqi people. The Wahabis with the Sunnis, the Shias from Iran working with the Shia population. So it's not beyond consideration that we would have a radicalized state even under a US occupation in the aftermath.

General Clark's pre-Iraq views are today becoming more and more alarming in light of recent activities and belligerence regarding Iran. More alarming still is that the administration pretends that the sort of actions taken by Iran to undermine our Iraq efforts are something that shouldn't be expected from a neighboring country who would expect to be next if those efforts were to succeed.
A particularly striking comment on the clip above:
Wow! That is exactly what happened!
Can we hope that General Clark's worries about the potential for military conflict with Iran will not see similar comments in the years to come?
Perhaps.. If we continue to apply pressure to the White House, our Congress, and the media, there won't be a war with Iran to have been right about.

We must do all we can to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. Being right and having been right will do nothing to stop a war with Iran. Getting the message out to our elected representatives that we expect and demand better of them will be the key. Make sure they know that the watchful eye of "We the People" is on them now more than ever!
