Riverbend predicted this on Feb. 20, now we have 18 Hostages.
She accused the police of raping her. Maliki claimed she Lied!
This is meant to discourage other prisoners, especially women, from coming forward and making claims against Iraqi and American forces. Maliki is the stupidest man alive (well, after Bush of course...) if he believes his arrogance and callous handling of the situation will work to dismiss it from the minds of Iraqis. By doing what he is doing, he's making it more clear than ever that under his rule, under his government, vigilante justice is the only way to go. Why leave it to the security forces and police? Simply hire a militia or gang to get revenge. If he doesn't get some justice for her, her tribe will be forced to... And the Janabat (the Al Janabis) are a force to be reckoned with.
Maliki could at least pretend the rape of a young Iraqi woman is still an outrage in todays Iraq...
http://www.time.com/... has her story.
Well it took a little while but here it is.
http://www.iraqslogger.com/...
The statement, translated from the original Arabic, reads in part:
"God enabled this group of lions from the Islamic State of Iraq to capture 18 employees of the interior ministry from Diyala Province, and this blessed operation came in response to how those wearing these uniforms have waged war against the Sunnis and the community, and the most recent undertaking of this apparatus, criminal to its religion and community, was the rape of our sister in God, Sabrin al-Janabi," the statement reads.
Two demands of the Maliki government are listed. First, the group demands that the Iraqi goverment hand over the officers implicated in the alleged rape of Sabrin al-Janabi, and secondly that all female Sunni Muslim women be released.
This was predictable. The government will not comply and they have 24 hrs to. I bet these 18 innocent government workers will be killed, but I blame this on the Iraqi government. Their poor handling of the rape cover-up was despicable. Riverbend said it best.
She might just be the bravest Iraqi woman ever. Everyone knows American forces and Iraqi security forces are raping women (and men), but this is possibly the first woman who publicly comes out and tells about it using her actual name. Hearing her tell her story physically makes my heart ache. Some people will call her a liar. Others (including pro-war Iraqis) will call her a prostitute- shame on you in advance.

The joint U.S.-Iraq operations center in Diyala said Friday that 14 Iraqi policemen had gone missing.
``We work closely with the Iraqi police and Iraqi army to enforce security and prevent these events,'' said Lt. Col. Michael Donnelly, spokesman for U.S. forces in northern Iraq. U.S. officials were investigating, he said.
We are not doing a very good job.
jeff3 added this in the comments from an Iraqi paper on February 23 http://www.azzaman.com/...
Our political leaders have not even shown any sign of embarrassment as heinous crimes like these are being perpetrated under their noses.
They still hold to their chairs. They think sticking to their positions of power is much more important than listening to the moaning of Iraqi women and children and the raping of a country.
It is time to call U.S. President George Bush and congratulate him on the success of his new security plan which has desecrated the portion of our honor and humanity which no other power could touch before.
What a mess we have made...

Group claims it kidnapped 18 Iraqi government workers; 14 bodies later found
BAGHDAD (AP)
An al-Qaida-linked Sunni group said Friday that it kidnapped 18 government workers and soldiers in retaliation for the alleged rape of a Sunni woman by members of the Shiite-dominated police force. Hours later, the government said the bodies of 14 security officers had been found.
How do they know they are linked to al-Qaida?
