It's simple, makes a good effort to be conscientious, and in my opinion it is politically safe for the Democrats.
A Simple Exit Plan for Iraq
- No escalation.
- No permanent bases.
- Fully defund from March 1, 2008.
- Make provisions for a small strike force for emergency handling after 3/1/08, explicity stated not to be under the provisions of or related to the Iraq War Resolution of 2002.
- Help Iraqis with with some reasonable monetary assistance for reconstruction for a period of 1-3 years after 3/1/08, subject to conditions, including staying as one country and making demonstrable efforts and progress towards stabilization of their country.
In addition, legislate that the Iraq War Resolution is null and void.
Bush gets exactly one year to wrap things up in Iraq and bring the troops home. He knows ahead of time that there won't be ANY money after 3/1/08 and so he can't complain that Dems are doing something bad to the troops. And the Democrats will have fulfilled their campaign 2006 promise that if elected to power, they would work to "end the war."
