I don’t write a lot of diaries, but I thought I would pass on my withering dismissal of the latest nonsense out of the mouths of two Republicans Senator Olympia Snowe and Senator John Sununu, concerning the unmitigated debacle in Iraq. A story over at The Washington Post, entitled Iraq Debate Will Test GOP Senators' Unity, offers a treatment of the impending debate in the Senate on the Iraq resolution to withdraw troops by March 31, 2008. Listen to these poor sad sap Senators.
This priceless little whine from Olympia Snowe complains:
It hurts both sides, the fact that the debate hasn't occurred, (but) the disproportionate burden is borne by Republicans because we have a Republican president.
Oh, Senator Snowe, come now. The disproportionate burden is not borne by Republicans because we have a Republican president; the disproportionate burden is borne by the Republicans because we have a colossally failed Republican War that millions of people advised the Republicans was utterly a fool's errand that would end up as, well, how shall I say it, end up as the unmitigated debacle millions of people predicted. Let us not pretend that the results of this invasion were not foretold before it ever occurred.
Sing to me you woes, Senator John Sununu, soon to be the former Senator from New Hampshire:
It's unfortunate that we haven't had an opportunity to vote for all the different alternatives that are out there
Do tell, Senator, that we can't get a discussion on the floor. But I imagine you had nothing to do with this most unfortunate set of affairs.
But, Mommy, I want my cake and to eat it, too. Just what are these people smoking?
I suggest they spend some time, if they like their day jobs, pondering just what is the deepest meaning of Trent Lott’s observation: "Changing times call for changing tactics. We're adjusting to the circumstances that we're confronted with."
