From an email accidentally sent to my Inbox from a member of the Republican National Committee:
After some deep digging (on Wikipedia), I've discovered some interesting voting records regarding the sanctity of marriage among the leading possible candidates for President. To normalize the statistics, I've chosen six members of each party. Let's call them--
Democrats: Hillary, Barack, John, Bill R., Chris, and Joe
Republicans: Rudy, Newtie, Straight Talk, Mitt, Huck, and Sam
When it comes to the institution of marriage, the Republicans clearly have a stronger commitment than the Democrats:
Total Number Marriages (R) = 11
Total Number Marriages (D) = 8*
*This number is actually inflated by one, as one of the Democrats is a widow.
In other words, the six Republicans have elected 11 wives (nearly two apiece), whereas the Democrats have elected seven (plus one completing an unfinished term). We can comfortably claim that they have elected average of 1.0 wives, compared to our much more seasoned and experienced 2.0. The Democrats may attempt to spin this number by pointing out that the Republicans have five divorces among them to the Democrats' one. We can't let such fuzzy math cloud the issue. We may want to point out that, among the most well-known candidates, Republicans clearly have the upper hand when it comes to belief in marriage:
Rudy: 3
Newtie: 3
Straight Talk: 2
Mitt: 1*
*That we know of.
Among Democrats, Hillary, Barack, John, and Bill R. have a mere four marriages total, or only one more than either of our leading candidates. The Dems may try a vicious spin by comparing the average duration of the marriages, but that's beside the point. Anyway, we must stay on message. Also, we can remind voters of what happened the last time a once-married Democrat occupied the White House.
By handling this properly -- constant repetition of the facts until the MSM buys into our perspective -- we can own the issue of the sanctity of marriage. After all, this approach worked for war; it should work for love, too.
