Brace yourselves. I am going to bring up the unmentionable: impeachment. Yeah yeah, I've heard that the Democrats don't have the votes. I beg to differ - last week has changed the entire political scene.
Nearly everyone in America is far more aware today than last Saturday that this Administration is more in need of impeachment than any other in American history. Last week it became painfully obvious that both intelligence and justice have become politicized in the last six years of Republican misrule. I am a regular peace demonstrator and I thought there was a noticeable change of the public mood last night at a demonstration I attended. I noticed that we demonstrators encountered a far more enthusiastic reception than I have ever before noticed. We also encountered fewer negative responses in the form of the ocassional finger or sneer. The Senate vote might be iffy but, impeachment proceedings begin in the House where members tend to be in closer touch with the pulse of the electorate and a vote there would be much closer than in the Senate.
Consider: a politician is a politician is a politician. Even GOPers aren't so loyal that their own reelection is not more important to each of them than ideology; this wise old seer predicts that more and more Republican rats will desert this Administration's sinking ship. (Anyone remember that Repubs voted for Nixon's impeachment, and that it was a group of GOPers who went to the White House to ask him to resign. Am I the only one old enough to remember? - and I'm old enough to be senile!) This last week made it hard to remember the Walter Reed, and VA scandals. Cheney's handwritten notes were produced as evidence in Libby's trial, Rove was implicated in the firing of the 8 U.S. attorneys and finally Plame's testimony yesterday added gasoline to a raging fire.
Perhaps one of the worst decisions this administration has made in the last six years was exposing Valerie Plame - and not just because it was not in the best interests of our national security - from a political point of view that decision may be a massive timber that finally sinks their leaky ship. Valerie came across our television screens yesterday as a passionately committed, and intelligent female patriot; neither did her stunning beauty hurt her enormous personal appeal. Cheney and Rove, yellow chicken hawks themselves, look ever more like utter cads - AND criminally careless in their expose of a brave and covert agent.
BTW, the Republican talking point that Plame hadn't really been a covert agent was exposed as the lie it was; so Cheney and Rove - nor their apologists - can continue to hide behind that canard. Yesterday as we watched the House Oversight Committee hearing Rep. Waxman read a statement that had been approved by CIA Director Michael Hayden: "Ms. Wilson worked on the most sensitive and highly secretive matters handled by the CIA," The Republican excuse that her status wasn't protected because she hadn't been outside the U.S. in the last 5 years was another lie that was exposed during yesterday's testimony. Some of us even became aware that Victoria Toensing - either carelessly or intentionally - misled the committee about the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982. Worse yet for Republicans who will have to face voters in '08 - that fire is about to ignite an ammo dump: the no-bid crony contracts - as more and more evidence accumulates exposing the flagrant fraud and profiteering encouraged by this administration. I predict that the latter scandal will eclipse all others, as gas prices soar and our national infrastructure increasingly suffers.
If a vote were held Monday - let every Representative's vote become a matter of record! Many voters besides myself would want to know just who voted for and who voted against impeachment so we can get our revenge in '08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. I am personally convinced that this Administration is terrified of the possibility that they may have to face an impeachment hearing; I believe that impeachment fear is the real reason behind the surge - the Iraq Study Group be damned. Even worse for America would be another war on another front with Iran - risking the possibility of WW111 - again I would suspect craven political motives from this Administration before I would take the word of known liars and frauds.
