On Monday of this week, I was fortunate enough to again hear Senator John Edwards speak. This time he was speaking to the students at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. Senator Edwards is always a powerful speaker but this time he touched on some new issues and that was interesting too.
The students at Benedict College were obviously impressed with Senator Edwards and his message. He has a way of inspiring young people to reach out and achieve greatness. He makes them want to do more and he encourages them each step. He did that last spring when he accompanied a group of students to New Orleans to help in the clean up effort. And, he didn't just 'supervise' that operation, he got in there and worked with the students. What an exemplary human being! Elizabeth (another exemplary human being) was right, America needs John Edwards more than we've ever needed a single individual. And, he is so capable of doing the job.
I have seen John Edwards on numerous occasions and Elizabeth on a couple. Both are magic. Both are the embodiment of enthuasiasm. They could inspire me to walk on the moon. Not since JFK and RFK have we seen such a personality on the American political scene. I am of the age to remember the Kennedys and to have the fiber of my soul crushed upon their untimely deaths. I recall many people in America then were disoriented as we were after 9/11. It was scary and we needed the Kennedys. Their loss left such a void.
One day I spoke with Elizabeth Edwards about how her husband, John reminded me of Bobby Kennedy... truly the beloved Kennedy, and I named a few reasons for my statement. She quickly said 'You don't know how much more there is!' and she went on to name a long list of comparisons all of which I agreed with. He is the promise of a rebirth of the spirit of the '60s that was taken away. He is the promise of showing us the way to reach for the stars and expect to 'be better than this'! He is everything that America ideally stands for but has lost in the last few years.
John Edwards was my Senator and I am so proud to say that he has received my vote EVERY time his name has been on the ballot. And, I am proud to say he will continue to receive It. The first time I gave him my vote with a little trepidation because I was distrustful of politicians. I still am, but I am NOT distrustful of John Edwards. John Edwards is integrity. If I could convey the style and class of the John Edwards I see fairly often you would understand. Remember when the holder of the Office of the President was expected to be a 'cut above'. Well, he's a cut above and even a cut above that. No one else will do when we have the opportunity to have John Edwards as our next President of the United States.
