This from Utah Rep. Chris Cannon:
There is nothing wrong with firing a U.S. attorney for reasons of politics. The fact is, the Democrats have been alleging corruption, (but) there is nothing on the table yet that would indicate corruption. U.S. attorneys are political, and they exist to pursue the agenda of the president, not their own."
Wrong!
I'll give him the idea that the President can point the USAs in the direction of what types of cases to focus on, be it immigration, drug enforcement, white-collar crime, whatever. Setting that agenda is perfectly appropriate.
However, once appointed and confirmed, the USAs function to prosecute federal crimes based on evidence, not the political priorities of the administration. In no way should this be a political agenda targeting people or corporations based on their allegience, or lack thereof, really, to the administration as appears to be the case with the Gonzales 8.
I don't know how Rep. Cannon could get this so inanely wrong, but it's a little scary that he holds an office in Congress yet doesn't grasp basic civics.
