So it seems that Stephen will have both Madeleine Albright and JamesFallows on. I'm guessing that Fallows is the "Interview nook" guest.
I bet Albright's here as an expert, but her latest book has just been released in paperback and she seems to be doing some press for that. She was on TDS last year around this time, I believe selling "The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections on America, God, and World Affairs." Roughly, it's about religious fundamentalism and political culture. PubWeekly said it has a "a remarkably accessible, even breezy style", continuing
In this ambitious, thoughtful, and wide-ranging treatment, Albright deftly balances the pragmatic need to confront religious-based unrest and the idealistic need to temper one's own personal beliefs in the public realm. While fully acknowledging the threat al- Qaeda poses, Albright rejects the notion that a "clash of civilizations" is in progress and wisely calls for care and nuance in how America approaches international confrontations that are tinged with religion.
And at a recent celebrity auction, someone paid $1,350 to have tea with her. I hope they go with a quality loose leaf... that's just too much for a cuppa Lipton's.
Fallows is a writer-politico with The Atlantic Monthly (Colbert sends me there so often, I'm thinking about subscribing). He blogs frequently at his own site, and occasionally posts at HuffPo. I didn't find any specific reason for his visit... most of what he's written about lately seems to be tech-y (that's also one of his things) or about life in Shanghai, where he's living these days. He also covers American politics/policy from a Chinese angle, and wrote some pieces about Iran and Iraq in February that got some blogospheric attention. I was going to guess that that would be the topic, and then checked the blog (to find the bit where he wrote about his bad haircut)... he's updated, and yes, it's All About Iraq. Also, Colbert is a nice guy who doesn't dye his hair. |
