I think it is time for some kind of reality check.
Some days, like today I feel as if I fell into a rabbit hole and woke somewhere other than the America I thought I was in.
Hope has risen though in the 2006 election in which a sensible majority was elected to provide some oversight (and I dare hope for impeachment and removal soon) of the wayward executive in the nation's house. Kind of like turning the light on and seeing a room full of cockroaches heading for cover. (Hope it is not too Kafka-esque)
But still, I wonder about some things:
If the president's brain is Karl Rove and he is now under a suspicious cloud, who is doing the president's thinking?
If the president's voice is Tony Snow and he is indisposed due to surgery, who is doing his speaking?
If the vice-president provides the cajones to the president and he is absent at an undisclosed location (looking for a heart?) who is providing the testosterone?
If Alberto Gonzales has the president's back but is running from accountability who is giving the legal advice?
If the occupation of Iraq is going so well, when are the troops allowed to enjoy their success?
Why does this man, George W Bush, think he has no one to answer to?
How is it that there is no scandal too big that it can't be ignored?
The invasion and war? Contracts without bids? Abu Ghraib? Guantanamo? Torture in the name of defense of the nation? The US attorney firings? Voter roll purges? Walter Reed and the discounting of veterans' sacrifice? Why does he use the wounded for political show and disallow the true photos of coffins draped with flags? And I am sure there is more that I have missed - feel free to add or append.
As a citizen, I want competency from government not criminality, legitimacy not lies, responsibility not reprehensible actions, decency not disrespect of every democratic tradition that our Constitution once stood for.
I am tired, but the fight is still on.
