How long will it be before the bedrock of the Republic Party, the fundamentalist Christians, begin demonstrating against Mitt Romney? Here in Arizona, it's a long-standing tradition for fundamentalists to try to "save" the heathen Mormons from eternal damnation:
The confrontations between Mormon worshipers and those who think they need saving have been going on for decades outside the Arizona Temple and longer than that at other places, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said.
Obviously the fundamentalists described in the Arizona Republic story are extremists, even within the already extreme fundamentalist community. But, imagine the attraction for campaign media when a handful of activists doggedly work to "save" Romney and his followers. Action News at 6, Katie Couric, and CNN will be all over it!
While Mitt's way behind in the polls, his fund-raising success (as well as the lack of promising candidates within the Republic party) could bring up his numbers substantially. As the Romney campaign begins to emerge into the light, will we see Christian groups attempting to de-legitimize his candidacy? We can only hope; the distractions will be amusing, to say the least.
