I’m torn. I know that Don Imus is a racist. That much is clear. But, the problem is how we should now punish Al Sharpton for it.
I, like many, am disgusted by Don Imus’ remarks. This type of speech should be met with fierce and swift action. So we must act now, and make sure that Al Sharpton knows that this will not be tolerated. After all, if we let this pass without rebuke, if we don’t make an example of Al Sharpton, how then is Don Imus to learn his lesson?
This is not the first time Don Imus has made these types of abhorrent remarks. He has a storied history of it. But, if Al Sharpton isn’t punished for it, how will Imus learn? How will our nation learn?
When Imus called Gwen Ifill a "Cleaning Lady", we should have acted. We should have sought out Al Sharpton immediately, shamed him publicly. Instead, we failed to act on Al Sharpton, and Don Imus didn’t learn a thing.
Years passed, and Don Imus made more of these slurs on the radio. He became the morning destination for politicians and opinion makers. All the while he continued his quippy, irreverent racism. Everyone ignored it. Had we only acted earlier in the punishment of Sharpton, perhaps the women of Rutgers would have been spared this wretched experience.
Not this time. Oh no. This time Al Sharpton will be punished to the fullest extent. This time we will drag out Al and deride him in the town square the way he deserves. If we don’t, then men like Imus will never stop. The racism will continue.
This is where we make our stand against Don Imus. We will say with one voice that this is wrong. That this is unacceptable. That Al Sharpton will get what Don Imus deserves.
Some are already helping me punish Al Sharpton for Don Imus’s hate speech.
Thanks.
Together we can make it happen.
